THE National Institute of Standards and Industrial Technology (NISIT) under Certificate Division ran a two-week training for Understanding and Implementing Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) in Food Safety, Food Safety Management Systems Requirements, Quality Management Systems Requirements, Safety and Auditing & Lead and Audit Training where participants from Food and beverage industries attended.

The first week of the Public Training programme was held at NISIT’s training room from 18th to 19th May and delivered by the Executive Manager for Certificate Division Mr Benzamine Zairo.

The second training session was held at Gateway Hotel on the 22nd to 26th of May by an external trainer Mr Gerry Hill who was contracted by the British Standards Institute (BSI).

The Testing Infrastructure in any economy is the fundamental point of upholding final quality checks of any Conformity Assessment Scheme Value Chain, the Executive Manager for Accreditation Division Mr Christopher Mosoro said.

“PNG as a sovereign nation is no exception to this fact of the matter,” he added.

“The PNG Laboratory Accreditation Scheme (PNGLAS), under NISIT, has seen a lot of struggles in testing laboratories trying to comply to ISO/IEC 17025:2017 standard to be accredited as competent testing and calibration laboratories to produce reliable test results.

“It is a concern to see Public Testing Laboratories, where majority of MSME, government and public rely on, having a downward trend and are not able to produce a trusted Statement of Conformity on their testing materials due to of lack of accreditation.

Papua New Guinea has experienced a decline in Accredited Testing Laboratories over the last three years (2020 – 2022), the National Institute of Standards, and Industrial Technology (NISIT) acting Director-General of Mr Victor Gabi said in a media statement.

“Construction materials testing, chemical testing, food and microbiology testing, assay testing for precious metals, environmental testing, calibration laboratories have been the main laboratories that have, over the years, obtained and maintained accreditation to (International Organisation of Standards (ISO)/ International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 17025 Management of Testing and Calibration Laboratories.
