Inspiring the Next Generation: Students Explore Science Behind Everyday Measurements

Port Moresby, 21 May 2025 – Most people don’t think twice about how much fuel they pump, the weight of their groceries, or the accuracy of a thermometer—but behind it all is the science of measurement, or Metrology. In celebration of World Metrology Day yesterday (20th of May), seven Grade 12 science students from Kundu International Academy were given the opportunity to explore this vital field during a visit to the Measurement Standards Laboratories (MSL) at the National Institute of Standards and Industrial Technology (NISIT).

This year’s theme, "Measurements for all times, for all people," underlines the importance of accurate and reliable measurements in promoting fair trade, public safety, innovation, and sustainable development. The tour, hosted by MSL staff, gave students hands-on exposure to the real-world applications of measurement science. From testing laboratory equipment to observing calibration processes, the students saw firsthand how precise measurement underpins a wide range of sectors including healthcare, manufacturing, aviation, construction, and environmental science.

NISIT emphasized that introducing young learners to Metrology was about more than just teaching how to measure—it’s about instilling a mindset of precision, curiosity, and critical thinking. This early engagement helps lay the groundwork for a more informed, skilled, and innovative generation that can contribute to Papua New Guinea's economic growth and global competitiveness. “We are privileged and honoured to be here at NISIT learning about your work,” said Ms. Brigette Wange, Head of Science at Kundu International Academy, who led the group. “I know my students have learnt a lot. This experience will help them decide on their future careers and hopefully spark an interest in science and technology.” Officer in charge of MSL Mr. Sylvester Vovovon said “MSL hopes that continued outreach— like student lab tours and educational programs—will inspire the next generation to appreciate the power of precise measurement. Whether in a classroom, a clinic, a marketplace, or a laboratory, Metrology touches every aspect of modern life.

“Through its scientific, industrial, and legal metrology services, NISIT plays a central role in maintaining trustworthy standards. These efforts contribute to consumer confidence, public safety, and technological advancement across the country.” As 2025 also marks 150 years since the signing of the Metre Convention, this year’s celebration honors the global collaboration that has unified and strengthened measurement practices around the world. Papua New Guinea, through NISIT, remains committed to advancing its metrology systems to ensure that measurements serve all people, at all times. “Let us all recognize and celebrate the silent force behind progress—the science of measurement. Happy World Metrology Day 2025,” Mr Vovovon said.
