WORLD ACCREDITATION DAY 2021
Accreditation – Supporting the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Every year, on the 9th of June, we celebrate World Accreditation Day. It is a global initiative established by International
Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC) and International Accreditation Forum (IAF), supported by Asia Pacific Accreditation Cooperation (APAC) for all accreditation bodies. PNG is an Associate Member of ILAC/IAF/APAC through the National Institute of Standards and Industrial Technology (NISIT) under its Accreditation Division. An Accreditation Body provides various  accreditation schemes for testing laboratories, calibration laboratories, inspection bodies, certification bodies, proficiency testing, validation and verification bodies according to respective
harmonised, international standards and guidelines approved by ILAC, IAF and APAC. The Accreditation Division of NISIT, operating as PNG Accreditation Services (PNGAS) is established by a statute referredto in NISIT Act. It currently runs PNG Laboratory Accreditation Scheme (PNGLAS) for testing laboratories while other
accreditation schemes are yet to be developed. This is year World Accreditation theme is: “Accreditation – Supporting the Implementation of Sustainable Development
Goals. Accreditation by ILAC definition is: ” An Independent evaluation of conformity assessment bodies against recognised standards to ensure their impartiality and competence to carry out specific activities, such as tests, calibrations, inspections, provision of proficiency testing programs and certifications.”

Accreditation Supports Implementation of SDGs in PNG in many ways. In NISIT-PNGLAS, testing in an accredited testing laboratory is very important for supporting the life of our People, the Planet and bring Prosperity. Testing on food products makes it safe for our people. Testing for environment help us to protect and sustain our planet. Testing for
trade purposes brings prosperity to our economy. Only by testing, we know what control measures or preventative measures to apply, eliminating and/or minimising risks which hinder all forms of development. Accredited testing laboratories bring competent to laboratory test results, competent to laboratory staff, competent to measuring equipment. This high level of competency in testing laboratories can assist government, private sectors and the public to make quality decisions for human health, reducing poverty and increasing safety, protecting environment and create sustainable business interventions which greatly supports SDGs. In addition, accredited testing laboratories
provide equal employment opportunities and competent workforce in a continual improvement management system that is always evolving to support SDGs in one way or another.
NISIT spearheads all standards and conformity assessment programs in PNG. And through PNGLAS, it encourages more testing laboratories to be accredited to support the government improve our standing against the SDGs. Currently, the following laboratories are accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 standard:
