National Measurement Standards Services
The National Measurement Standards Services is another area of service offered by the Institute. At present, all measurement services offered come under the Metrology (Measurement Standards) Division of the Institute and are facilitated or conducted through the Measurement Standards Laboratory. The services offered by MSL broadly cover the area of Calibration Services and Verification Services of measuring equipment and measuring artifacts.
Empowered by our mandated functions and responsibilities, the Institute through the Metrology Division is nationally recognized as the custodian of Papua New Guinea National Standards of Measurement. PNG’s National Measurement Standards are based on the International units of measurement (SI Units). In order for these measurements to be accepted worldwide they must be traceable to Primary Standards maintained by the National Measurement Institute (NMI) of Australia. These are in turn traceable to the prototype held in Paris, French. Hence, all the measurement services are verifiable and traceable at the national level to the international prototype.
Measurement Standards Laboratory
The Measurement Standards Laboratory in its current capacity and capability is responsible for the provision of Calibration and Verification Services in Papua New Guinea. The Laboratory Facility gained accreditation from NATA in the area of Physical and Dimension in October 2005. The Facility gained accreditation by conforming to the international requirements of ISO/IEC 17025:2004 - General requirements for the competence of calibration and testing laboratories. Since NATA accreditation is recognized under the MRA at the regional and international level, the facility is likewise recognized at that level. Our highly trained metrologists have been declared as approved signatories in officiating and endorsing tests certificates issued by the MSL facility of the Institute. The accredited facility provides for far wider recognition of the credibility, reliability and confidence accompanying the test certificates issued by MSL Facility of the Institute around the Asia-Pacific region and internationally. In light of the recent recognition, the Institute is proud to maintain an accredited measurement and testing facility in Papua New Guinea.
The Measurement Standards Laboratory facility comprises of 5 partitioned and sound enclosed compartments hosting the 5 specific testing and laboratory facilities. Housed within the specific laboratories are the appropriate testing equipments and instruments. The laboratory maintains a rigorous quality control regime in maintaining the measurement standards under its ISO/IEC 17025 management system protocol. The Facility is basically equipped with the necessary standards-reference instruments and equipment to effect the relevant measurement services.

MSL through the Metrology Division will conduct scheduled training where and when necessary. Regarding your training needs, the Staff of MSL are also on hand and ready to provide as much assistance as possible. As all MSL training will be targeting the general public and those from the Industries, MSL through the Institute will publicly advertise in the print media.
Advisory Services on Measurement Standards
MSL will provide all the necessary advice and consultation regarding your measurement needs and requirements in the area of calibration and verification. The Metrology Division will also make available and give you advice on your measurement needs and the technical requirements relating to physical and scientific metrology, trade measurements and the legal metrology in general.
